Technology continues to advance year on year - to the benefit of businesses of all sizes across the globe.
All of the businesses that still exist, that is…many have become victims of cybercrime and owners and managers were unable to ensure their survival.
October is Cyber Security Awareness Month - an annual initiative to promote cybersecurity awareness and education - and here at EPX, we are looking to work with organisations to ensure they are protected against the attacks that threaten their data and their future.
Four steps to a strong defence
- Enabling multi-factor authentication - adds a vital layer of security to all logins. In most cases, a hacker can't breach an account protected by MFA.
- Using strong passwords and a password manager - Despite the increased use of biometrics, passwords still rule.
- Updating software - Outdated software creates vulnerabilities that cybercriminals can exploit. Automating updates is a good way to ensure they’re done promptly.
- Recognising and reporting phishing attacks - Train your team to identify phishing emails, suspicious links, and unsolicited attachments.
Cybersecurity skeletons in the closet
- Outdated software - updates fix vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit.
- Weak passwords - don’t leave your employees to create their own without guidance and requirements for creating strong passwords.
- Unsecured wi-fi - ensure your wi-fi is protected or consider a virtual private network to shield your data.
- Disregarding Mobile Security - Ensure that all company-issued devices have passcodes or biometric locks enabled. Consider implementing mobile device management (MDM) solutions to enable you to enforce security policies.
- Shadow IT - use of unauthorised applications that can pose serious security risks. Put a clear policy in place!
Missing essentials
- No data back-ups - have at least three copies of your data, stored in two different media types..with one copy stored securely off-site.
- No Multi-Factor Authentication - an extra layer of protection.
- No Incident Response Plan - how will your team detect, respond to and recover from a security incident?
- Lack of employee training - employees are your strongest line of defence - or your weakest link!
We can help....

October is the month where awareness of cybersecurity is raised, but we are working on it throughout the year - helping businesses to ensure the protection they need is in place.
