Dixons Carphone admits huge data breach

Dixons Carphone admit to a huge data breach from a hacking attempt last year where 5.9m payment cards and 1.2m personal data records had an attempt to compromise them.

Do you use Carphone Warehouse? Was your personal details subject to one of the data breaches?  Would you like the Cyber Security team at EPX to check what we can find on the Dark Web for you?

Dixons Carphone chief executive Alex Baldcock said he was "extremely disappointed" by the data breach and "sorry for any upset", "The protection of our data has to be at the heart of our business, and we've fallen short here”.

Carphone Warehouse said it had no evidence that the information had left its systems or resulted in any fraud, but it was contacting those affected to advise them.  The 1.2m personal data records accessed by the hackers consisted of non-financial information such as names, addresses and email addresses.

Carphone Warehouse have brought in leading cyber security experts and added extra security measures to its systems to avoid this happening in future.

Our Cyber Security team monitors the Dark Web on your Behalf

The Cyber Security team at EPX works with all our customers to provide a level of Cyber Security and online protection that exceeds the governments current Cyber Essentials Scheme.  We will come in to your business and carry out a complete security audit covering all aspects of your network including hardware, software, policies and contracts to know exactly where you stand with your current security.

We will then draw up a recommendation report of changes to allow you to comply with the Cyber Essentials Scheme.  Alternatively we are able to work with your existing internal IT or support company to implement any of the recommendations also.

EPX carries out yearly security auditing to ensure that any security implementations are being administrated and managed as well as any updates to best practices and Cyber Essentials scheme can be reviewed and integrated into the current solution.

Top 10 Ways to Protect yourself After a Data breach

1. Change ALL your passwords for everything. Cybercriminals can quickly use data collected to take over your social media, bank, shopping accounts, online accounts and use them for their own benefit. Make sure you use strong complex passwords and update them every 90 days just to add that extra layer of protection.

2. Gather as much information about the breach as possible. Find out what data was stolen, was it encrypted, and how losing this data will affect you.

3. Contact all your financial institutions. If you already know that your sensitive data was breached, let your bank or mortgage lender know and take steps to stay secure.

4. Set up a fraud alert, doing so requires your identity verification before performing any changes or actions regarding your bank account, opening a new one, issuing a credit card or increasing any limits.

5. Control billing and financial statements carefully, keep an eye out for any suspicious or irregular activity. See what the business or organisation that put your security at risk has to offer in response to the data breach. For example, you may be offered to get free credit card monitoring services (that usually come at a cost).

6. Freeze your credit file on websites of major consumer credit reporting bureaus. The reason why we recommend this is that hackers could use stolen data to apply for credit at a lender or other company. If you are married, your spouse should freeze their credit file too.

7. React to bills from strangers as they might indicate that someone has opened an account on your behalf. In such situation, you should reach out to your creditor immediately.

8. Watch out for phishing emails that fraudsters might compose using your personal data. Having so much sensitive information about you allows scammers compose persuasive messages that look like they’re sent from business or organisations you actually have business dealings with. Therefore, be extremely cautious when opening emails you receive!
