On 23rd April 2023, mobile phone users across the UK will receive a government test emergency alert. A message will be sent by the Emergency Alerts service. Citizens are warned of major incidents such as terrorist attacks, natural disasters, and severe weather conditions.

Every mobile phone user connected to a 4G or 5G mobile network with an active SIM card will receive the test alert.

What is the Emergency Alert Service?

The Emergency Alerts service is the latest initiative by the UK government to keep citizens informed during emergencies. During the event, it sends an extremely loud siren-like sound and vibration for approximately 10 seconds, followed by a message alert sent directly to mobile phones in the affected area. It includes information and advice about what to do in the event of a major incident.

Here is what the alert will say in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland:

This is a test of Emergency Alerts, a new UK government service that will warn you if there's a life-threatening emergency nearby.

In an actual emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe.

Visit gov.uk/alerts for more information.

This is a test. You do not need to take any action.

The service uses 4G and 5G cell broadcast technology, which allows alerts to be sent to all mobile phones using such networks, in a specific area.

Alerts can be sent by a range of organisations, including the police, fire and rescue services, the Environment Agency, and the National Health Service. They are designed to provide information on a range of incidents, such as floods, fires, public health emergencies, and terrorist attacks.

What Should You Do During an Emergency Alert?

In the event of an emergency alert, it is imperative to remain calm and follow the advice provided. The message will provide information on what to do, such as where to go for safety or how to avoid danger.

You should also share emergency alerts with others, especially those who may not have received them. Family members, friends, and colleagues who may be in the affected area can be included in this list.

It is worth noting that the Emergency Alerts service will only be used in the event of a major incident that poses a significant risk to life or property. The service is not designed to provide routine information, such as traffic updates or weather warnings.

Final Thoughts

Providing citizens with Emergency Alerts during emergencies is a valuable new initiative that keeps them informed and safe. This test alert on 23rd April 2023 serves as a reminder of the importance of this service.

The message will not be sent to you if you use 2G or 3G networks, or if you are using an older device. You won't receive the alert if you are using Wi-Fi only or if you are running an older or outdated version of iOS or Android. The same applies if your device is in aeroplane mode or turned off.

Contact your mobile provider if you are unsure if your device is compatible with Emergency Alerts.

In the event of an emergency, you and your family members can prepare and be informed by understanding how the Emergency Alerts service works.
