Sustainable Tech Habits for your business to consider

Businesses around the globe are increasingly embracing eco-friendly practices - and how technology is used is a high consideration.

Many companies have an environmental policy outlining the commitment of an organisation or government to the laws, regulations, and other policy mechanisms concerning environmental issues. This will be updated annually in a bid to ensure an environmentally friendly approach to business.

Encouraging staff to be ‘green’ within the office environment can be done in a number of ways, from turning off lights, computers and electrical appliances at the end of the day to on-site renewable energy sources!

Here we take a look at some of the sustainable processes you may want to consider when it comes to tech in your business:

Cloud Computing

Cloud computing sustainability or ‘Green Cloud’ refers to an environment-friendly cloud that reduces carbon emissions and promotes the use of renewable energy to reduce energy needs.

All the major cloud providers have taken steps to convert their data centres into green cloud. Cloud computing is a core part of our offering here at EPX, and we have worked with hundreds of businesses to move them to Cloud computing and a more sustainable way of working.

Remote Work

Remote working saves energy by eliminating the commute, less energy to power large office blocks and also a reduction in paper use due to the digital systems brought in for remote working.

Moving to a hybrid or homeworking arrangement can require a lot of planning as well as the introduction of new systems, but IT support companies are able to work with business owners to ensure a smooth transition – ensuring security and productivity.

E-Waste Recycling Program

E-waste recycling is the process of extracting valuable materials after shredding e-waste (old, end-of-life or discarded electrical and electronic equipment) into tiny pieces that could be reused in a new electronic appliance – it is something that we do as a company. As part of equipment disposal, we also secure-erase equipment and send old tech to be recycled through a local CIC.

Sustainable Data Practices

Sustainable data management helps to minimise the environmental impact of data management practices - data centres and other IT infrastructure consume significant amounts of energy and produce a considerable amount of carbon emissions.

Sustainable data management practices aim to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by optimising data centre design and improving energy efficiency.

Secondly, sustainable data management helps to reduce waste as data storage devices, such as hard drives and solid-state drives, are not required.

Lifecycle Assessments

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), also known as life cycle analysis, is the method of analysing the effects that a product has on the environment, taking into account its full lifespan. This is an important step to take when looking to understand and improve a product’s environmental impact.

This is something we do as part of our Virtual Chief Information Officer (vCIO) service - when you are one of our customers, we will meet up with you on a regular basis to talk about business strategy - what the plan is and where the business is going and as part of this process we complete IT hardware lifecycle assessments for our clients.

Green Marketing

Green marketing refers to the practice of developing and advertising products based on their real or perceived environmental sustainability.

We use PC Powersave, a product that we have been instrumental in the development of, and this helps us with green marketing by identifying products that are inefficient. Intelligent shutdowns, subtle CPU throttling, dynamic power profiles and rogue process alerting tools all work together to reduce the energy consumption of a client’s computer systems.
